Thirteen Sport Clubs from VCU and the University of Richmond (UR) participated in the 4th Annual Capital Cup, which took place November 15 & 16, 2019. Matches were held on both campuses throughout the weekend.

Heading into the opening matches of the weekend, UR lead this year’s series at 2-1, thanks to the results of three matches played prior to November 15th: UR Quidditch defeated VCU 120-60 and UR Crew Club won 2-1 with VCU’s  Women's Ultimate Club defeating UR 8-6.

Early Friday night both VCU and UR hosted the first round of matches - Men’s Lacrosse at VCU and Men’s Soccer at UR. Both competitions were close as each team took turns taking the lead. The VCU Men's Lacrosse Club defeated the Spiders by clenching a 6-5 victory. The UR Men's Soccer Club defended their home field with a 4-3 win, scoring a penalty kick in the final five minutes to prevail.

Meanwhile, UR Women's Rugby opened their contest at home in front of a large, raucous crowd. Early in the game, both teams were tied at 5, before VCU pulled away with 15 unanswered points, which lead to a 43-17 VCU victory. Women's Soccer played on the adjacent field. By halftime, VCU was leading 3-0. Each team scored a goal in the second half; however, VCU persevered with 4-1 win. By the end of the night, with a no-contest win for VCU Men's Rugby, VCU led the Capital Cup series with a 5-3 lead.

Saturday morning contests began with VCU hosting Tennis. Ultimately, UR won 6-4 after a few close matches, including a Women's Singles match that went to a final score of 8-6 in favor of UR.

While Tennis was indoors, the Baseball Clubs and fans were subjected to a cloudy, windy, cold game at UR’s Pitt Field. UR got on the board first, but VCU quickly responded and then took the lead 3-1. The score remained unchanged until the 7th inning when UR earned a run back and stole some of the momentum. After a scoreless 8th inning for VCU, UR continued to make contact as they loaded and then cleared the bases en route to a three-run inning to make the score 5-3. VCU was unable to score in the top of the 9th, giving UR another point to even the series at 5-5.

As the Baseball game was coming to a conclusion, Men’s and Women’s Swimming began at the Weinstein Center on UR’s campus. VCU jumped out to an early lead and never looked back by winning the meet 107-62. In the Men's Ultimate Frisbee Club match, UR quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead before VCU scored. While both teams put points on the board, UR outfought the Rams 13-7.

Going into the final event with the series tied at 6-6, the Water Polo match would ultimately determine the Capital Cup winner.

A large crowd gathered for the contest and from the first whistle, both teams scored quickly and frequently throughout the duration of the match, keeping the score within 2 points. UR led 7-6 at halftime. As the final minutes approached in the second half, VCU and UR were tied at 13 to send the match to overtime. A scoreless first overtime resulted in a double overtime where VCU ultimately scored the game-winning goal with less than ten seconds remaining. Fans reacted with exuberance as VCU defeated UR 7-6 overall, claiming their first outright Capital Cup Victory.
