Facility Operations Attendant

Facility Operations Attendants are expected to provide quality customer service and ensure the safety of patrons, the facility, and the equipment, at all VCU Recreational Sports Facilities. In this role, staff work at the Cary Street Gym, Cary Street Field, Thalhimer Tennis Center, and MCV Gym within the areas of member check-in, equipment check-out, fitness center, or a combination of the areas.

Requirements:

  • Professional demeanor, a positive attitude, attention to detail, and excellent customer service skills
  • Must be able to provide a minimum of 20 hours of availability (including weekends)
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexible, able to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to supervisory directives as necessary

Fitness Maintenance Worker 

Fitness Maintenance Workers are responsible for assisting with daily checklist maintenance of fitness equipment in the fitness activity areas. They assist with regular inspection of all weight equipment, maintain computerized workshop inventory, operate power equipment, power tools, hand tools, and automated systems. Fitness Maintenance Workers must be able to safely work with and around hazardous chemicals.

Requirements: Ability to work at least 8 hours a week and must possess a general knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, including basic tools.

Group Exercise Instructor 

Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for creating a positive atmosphere and teaching safe and effective classes in accordance with industry standards. Classes are taught using a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness. The Group Exercise Instructor will also serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness.

Requirements:

  • Must be currently certified by a nationally recognized fitness organization or possess a specialty certification:
    • Nationally recognized fitness organizations include ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM
    • Specialty certifications may include but are not limited to TRX, Yoga Alliance, Peak Pilates, Zumba, etc.
  • You must have a sound knowledge of fitness and the ability to design class plans for a variety of groups.
  • You must be available to work at Cary Street Gym and MCV Larrick Student Center, weekends, mandatory staff meetings and special events.
  • You must be a current VCU student.

Intramural Sports Official

Intramural Sports Officials are responsible for officiating intramural sports including but not limited to: flag football, soccer, and basketball.

Requirements: Previous officiating/playing experience not necessary, but is helpful. Training is provided.

Lifeguard 

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies in and around the pool.

LIFEGUARD CANDIDATES MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TO BE CONSIDERED FOR AN INTERVIEW:

  • Interested candidates MUST apply using the online application via Handshake. 
    • Once the application is submitted, applicants MUST attend Lifeguard tryouts to be considered for employment.
    • The next Lifeguard Tryout will be held on November 11, 2018, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Cary Street Gym.
       
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification (includes First Aid and CPR/AED).

Marketing Assistant 

Marketing Assistants are responsible for telling the story of VCU Rec Sports through written copy and visual communication. They maintain a consistent and professional image and voice for Recreational Sports through the use of copywriting/editing, quality images, video, and social media They ensure all marketing messages and activities are in keeping with the mission, vision, and values of Recreational Sports.

     Requirements: 

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and planning skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and work independently. 
  • Communications Assistants:
    • At least one year of experience or one year of coursework in public relations, marketing communication.
    • Demonstrated ability to write in a concise and professional manner for marketing and promotional purposes through a portfolio of work.
  • Visual Media Assistants - Graphic Design: 
    • At least one year of experience or one year of coursework in graphic design.
    • Strong graphic design skills as demonstrated through a portfolio of work.
    • Proven ability to work with digital image creation and editing software (Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud experience preferred)
    • Demonstrated ability to work with a digital SLR camera and photo editing software at a beginning/intermediate level.
  • Visual Media Assistant - Photo/Video:
    • At least one year of experience/coursework in photography and videography.
    • Strong photography and videography skills as demonstrated through a portfolio of work.
    • Proven ability to work with digital image creation and editing software (Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud experience preferred)

Membership Services Assistant

Membership Services Assistants provide outstanding customer service to our potential and current members. Primary duties include enrolling and renewing Recreational Sports memberships, registering locker and towel rentals, and assisting members in program registrations. They are also responsible for tabling at community and VCU-related events to promote Rec Sports memberships, programs, and facility offerings.

     Requirements: 

  • Professional demeanor, a positive attitude, attention to detail, and excellent customer service skills 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Strong computer knowledge (Microsoft applications and Google Drive) 
  • Retail, sales, or customer service related experience preferred
  • Flexible, able to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to supervisory directives as necessary

Outdoor Adventure Program Attendant

Outdoor Adventure Program Attendants are responsible for check-in and checkout of climbing wall gear, OAP rental equipment, registration of participants for Outdoor Adventure Program activities, belaying of participants, instruction of Belay Clinics and Climbing Clinics, willingness to enforce gym rules and regulation and other duties as assigned. Basic wall cleaning and maintenance work is involved.

Requirements: Ability to lift at least 50 lbs, basic climbing and belaying skills or the ability to learn these, willingness to work nights and weekends, and an open and welcoming attitude toward all potential users.

Personal Trainer


Personal Trainers are responsible for the design and management of clients' exercise programs. They are passionate, dedicated and determined to learn and grow along with their clients. It is their duty to motivate their clients to reach their goals and educate them during their fitness journey. Trainers at VCU Rec Sports train one-on-one and partner clients as well as instruct Small Group Training Classes. They conduct Fitness Assessments to measure muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness as well as vital health markers. Trainers provide their time and expertise to emphasize proper form, recovery and training methods. Trainers are expected to give each client their best and cater to their specific needs. If you are self-motivated, compassionate and eager to learn, this may be the best job for you.

Requirements:

  • You must have a sound knowledge of fitness and the ability to design fitness training programs for a variety of individuals and groups.

Sport Clubs Supervisor

Sport Clubs Supervisors are responsible for supervising evening and weekend Sport Club practices, games, and tournaments.They will work with officers, players, coaches, Recreational Sports staff, and visiting teams to promote a positive environment for all Sport Clubs related activities. This position encompasses a wide variety of program management, risk management, policy, procedures and training development, program administration, and program assessment and evaluation.

Water Safety Instructor

Water Safety Instructors are responsible for planning, coordinating and teaching American Red Cross learn-to-swim, water safety courses, and private/semi-private swim lessons.

  • Water Safety Instructors must have the following to be considered for this position: 
    • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. 
    • CPR/AED certification; and previous teaching experience.
    • Creative teaching style for children and adults
