Located on the lower level, the Cary Street Gym Aquatic Center is open and available for use with capacity limitations.
- Open and available for use with capacity limitations
- The Activity Pool will have a limit of one person per lane
- The Activity Pool will have a limit of one person per lane and should be used for fitness swimming or exercise purposes.
- The Leisure Pool is open for both recreational and fitness swimming purposes. Patrons are expected to maintain 10 feet of physical distance from members not in the same household.
- Family swim is allowed in this space. Members of the same family are permitted within 10 feet of each other, but need to remain at least 10 feet from others not in the same household.
- The Spa, rockwall and slide are currently closed
- Shared equipment (e.g., kickboards, pull buoys, hand paddles, etc.) are not available for use
1st Floor Fitness Center
- Open and available for use with capacity limits
- Certain weight equipment has been taken offline where physical distancing isn’t possible;
- Floor markings, barriers, and signs have been placed to denote capacity limits and changes to guidelines and procedures
Stretching Hallway
- Stretching mats have been moved to Court 1
- Cardio equipment has been moved to this space to allow for proper physical distancing
Fitness Mezzanine
- Open and available for use with capacity limits
- Floor markings, barriers, and signs have been placed to denote capacity limits and changes to guidelines and procedures
- Certain pieces of equipment have been relocated to the stretching hallway and on the courts
- Open and available August 17 for use with capacity limits
- Only Rec Sports staff will be permitted to belay climbers.
The Cary Street Gym Climbing area, located on the main level in the Fitness Center, features:
- 35-foot climbing wall with six top rope and one lead climbing routes.
- Freestanding boulder
- 18-foot bouldering section
Clinics, competitions, and open recreation all take place in the climbing area. Visit the Climbing and Bouldering page to view upcoming activities.
Climbing shoes and harnesses are available for free check out with your VCU Card.
The courts have been reconfigured to accommodate stretching, cardio machines, and group exercise classes.
- Court 1: stretching and core equipment
- 12x12 boxes have been marked on the floor to denote individual workout spaces.
- Court 2: Badminton and table tennis (members must bring their own equipment)
- Singles play only

- This space will be available for open recreation or other Recreational Sports programs when classes are not in session; please refer to the space schedule sign posted outside of the court. Members may use the equipment and are asked to clean it before and after use and return it when finished.
- Court 3: Rowing machines, Keiser cycling bikes, handcycle, and individual workout spaces
- Court 4: Group exercise classes
This room is only available for scheduled group exercise classes or other Recreational Sports programs; the room will be locked when not in use.
The Group Exercise studio is located on the main level, across from the four court gym. The studio features:
- Hardwood floor
- Mirrors
- Ability to be divided into two spaces
- Sound system
This space is currently closed.
The Mind/Body Studio is located on the main level, and features:
- Padded laminate floor
- Mirrors
- Barre
- Sound system
The cycling studio is currently closed; cycles have been moved to Court 4 for classes
The Cycling Studio is located on the lower level, across from the main locker rooms. It features:
- 26 bikes
- Stepped floors
- Sound system
Open and available for use with capacity limitations
The track is located on the second level, above the four court gym. It features:
- Three lanes
- Daily alternating direction of traffic
- 8.5 - 9.5 laps per mile
Racquetball courts have been repurposed with four workout boxes. Room occupancy of 4 people max. Racquetball is not currently permitted in this space.
- Courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Members are expected to be courteous of others and limit time in the space to no more than 60 minutes.
Locker Rooms & Bathrooms
- Open and available for use
- Use of locker rooms is highly discouraged
Day-use lockers are available for use, but use is highly discouraged.
