Outdoor Adventure Program

Climbing and Bouldering

The Climbing Wall and Bouldering Wall, in the Cary Street Gym, are managed by the Outdoor Adventure Program. Rec Sports members and their guests can climb with the supervision and belay by the Climbing Wall staff. All necessary climbing equipment is available to be checked out for free for use on the wall. This is a chalk free climbing facility.

Adaptive Climbing Clinics

A night devoted to climbing for everybody. 

We will have systems and wall staff specifically for people who need adaptive assistance. If you have an amputated limb, are in a wheelchair, or use specific medical devices for your daily living, come and experience the vertical realm of the Cary Street Gym Climbing Wall.

Clinic Registration and Descriptions

Climbing Clinics are listed on the OAP Calendar. Offerings change monthly and are added to the calendar ten days before the month begins.

  • Clinics are free.
  • Participants should pre-register in person at the climbing wall office during open hours:
    • Monday - Friday 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • Walk-ins can join if there is space. If no one is preregistered 24 hours in advance for the course we will cancel it.

 Anchors Clinic: Learn the basics of anchor building. Topics will include self and pre-equalizing anchors, top-rope anchors, and the safety concerns of building anchors. Some knots that may be useful to know are the figure-8, an overhand on a bight, and a bowline.
Skill level: Beginner
Fitness Level: Low

Climbing Techniques Clinic: Learn a variety of new techniques to help improve your climbing skills and movement. Techniques such as flagging, lock offs, and smearing will be covered. No prior knowledge of techniques is required.
Skill level: Beginner
Fitness Level: Low

Rappelling Clinic: Learn about the practice and dangers of rappelling. Skills such as the use of a backup prussic, rappelling on an ATC or munter, and proper communication will be addressed. Knowledge of how to belay with an ATC is encouraged.

Slackline Night: Learn the basic skills of slacklining, such as how to approach the line, strategies for walking on the line, and see demonstrations of more advanced skills that you can work towards.
Skill level: Beginner
Fitness Level: Low

Sport Lead Clinic: Learn the basics of sport lead. Topics such as clipping techniques, sport belaying, and proper spotting/safety measures will be addressed. A knowledge of top rope belaying is encouraged.

Trad Climbing Clinic: Learn about climbing on tradition gear. Topics such as the types of protection, proper gear placements, and methods for the evaluation of placements will be covered. Knowledge of lead climbing/belaying is encouraged.

Fitness Level: Low

Multi Pitch Clinic: Learn the basics of multi-pitch climbing, rappelling, necessary equipment, and strategies to make multi-pitch climbing more efficient. Knowledge of belaying, and tying in for top rope climbing is helpful.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Fitness Level: Low

Top Rope Rescue Clinic: Learn some of the common issues that can arise in a top rope situation. Escaping a belay will be the main technical system that will be covered. Prior knowledge of the munter hitch and prusik is helpful.
Skill Level: Intermediate

Aid Climbing Clinic: Come to the aid climbing clinic and learn how to get up routes that require more than just your hands and feet. Learn about ascenders, etries, daisy chains, and fifi hooks! Prior knowledge of lead climbing would be helpful.
Skill level: intermediate.
Fitness level: Low
