Graduate Assistant for Aquatics
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and managing the Learn to Swim program, certification classes, US Master’s Swimming programs, and aquatics-related special events.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of aquatics staff including Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguard Instructors, Water Safety Instructors, and US Master’s Swim Coaches.
  • Assist in providing leadership and direction to departmental aquatics programming that supports student success.
  • Regularly instruct swim lessons and certification classes based upon certifications to practice aquatic instructional skills and maintain professional competencies.
  • Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Aquatics

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
  • Must currently possess at least one of the two certifications: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and/or American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, AED and First Aid certifications.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting.
  • Instructor level certifications (First Aid, CPR/AED, Lifeguard Instructor).
  • Trainer level certifications (WSI-T or LGI-T).
  • Certified Pool Operator, Aquatics Facility Operator, or working knowledge of pool chemicals and pump room operations.

Graduate Assistant for Facility Operations (2)
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of facility operations staff, including Service Attendants, Weight Room Attendants, and Facility Managers.
  • Assist in the management of daily operations of all Recreational Sports facilities, including supervision, risk management, policy enforcement, access control, and reporting of maintenance/housekeeping concerns.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of informal recreation activities, events, and programs.
  • Assist in providing an effective risk management plan for Recreational Sports facilities and informal recreation.
  • Assist with identifying, implementing, and utilizing appropriate assessment and program evaluation strategies to inform policy and procedural decision-making, programming, facility operations, and resource allocation.
  • Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Facility Operations

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
  • Demonstrated experience working in recreation facility management.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting.

Graduate Assistant for Fitness and Instructional Programs
  • Assist in the management of the Personal Training program.
  • Assist with the direct supervision of the personal trainers and other instructional programming personnel.
  • Provide an effective risk management plan for those participating in personal training or instructional programs.
  • Assist with the development of strategies to publicize and promote personal training and instructional programs.
  • Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities Weekend On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Fitness and Instructional Programs

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
  • Two years of experience personal training.
  • National Personal Training certification by ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of current practices and standards in fitness programming and exercise technique.
  • Ability to instruct fitness classes requiring significant physical activity.


Preferred

  • National Group Exercise certification by ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience with software applications utilized for the administration of fitness and wellness related programming.
  • Experience in supervising student employees.
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification

Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports
  • Schedule and administer intramural sport offerings; collaborate with the Intramural Sports Coordinator to develop a calendar of intramural sports seasons and tournaments and communicate with respective facility coordinators for scheduling.
  • Assist with the management of a staff of approximately 45 student supervisors and officials; recruit, hire, train, supervise, and develop student staff through meetings, in-service trainings, and extramural events and clinics for intramural sports officials.
  • Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities Weekend On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Intramural Sports

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies Program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
  • At least two (2) years of sports officiating experience.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with a recreational sports program, preferably in intramural sports programming.

Preferred

  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Extensive knowledge in training intramural sports officials and intramural sports programming.
  • Membership and participation as a student in NIRSA.

 Graduate Assistant for Marketing and Communications
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the effectiveness of the Recreational Sports strategic marketing plan throughout the academic year.
  • Supervise undergraduate Marketing Managers and Marketing Assistants in the production of promotional media, including: copywriting, copyediting, social media, graphics, photography, and videography.
  • Support the efforts of the Assistant Director for Marketing & Communications in the management of the design and production process for all Recreational Sports marketing materials.
  • Identify, implement, and utilize appropriate assessment strategies to inform marketing, promotional, and communication strategies.
  • Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Marketing and Communications

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communication, Business Marketing, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Available to work a combination of weekday, evening, and/or weekend hours dependent upon program needs.
  • Must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Preferred

  • Prior experience working in recreation or sport-related setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development; ability to motivate and supervise staff.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by writing samples/portfolio of communication collateral.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and work independently.
  • Ability to complete assignments in a timely and orderly fashion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media platforms, project management, Microsoft Office/Google Docs, and graphic design software.

 Graduate Assistant for Outdoor Adventure Program
  • Assist with planning, coordinating and leading afternoon, day, weekend, and extended programs in a wide variety of outdoor activities.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and instructing the Student Outdoor Leadership Experience (SOLE) program, a 9-month student leadership course designed to train new OAP trip leaders.
  • Provide daily oversight to the Outing Rental Center, bike shop, and climbing wall.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of OAP staff including OAP attendants, managers, trip leaders, and program assistants.
  • Assist with providing and implementing an effective risk management plan for OAP programming and informal recreation.
  • Participate in Recreational Sports Facility Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.

Qualifications for GA for Outdoor Adventure Programs

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communication, Business Marketing, or related field.
  • Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
  • Documented experience leading and instructing outdoor recreation and experiential education programming.
  • Able to instruct a minimum of two (2) of the following: backpacking, caving, rock climbing, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, or whitewater rafting.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting.
  • Experience in supervising student employees.
  • Experience with Fusion software system.
  • Previous experience maintaining and repairing outdoor gear and equipment (sewing experience highly desired).
  • Experience in bicycle maintenance.
  • Experience overseeing challenge course programming.
  • Instructor and/or trainer level certifications (ACA, AMGA, PCIA, LNT, wilderness medicine)
