VCU Rec Sports Advisory Committee

Rec Sports is forming a standing advisory committee to receive on-going feedback from our users. The committee will review facility changes/upgrades, provide feedback on rules and guidelines changes, and offer regular insight and advice on the user experience.

We are seeking broad representation (including representatives from VCU Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Undergraduate and Graduate students, and Community Members).

If you are interested in serving in this capacity and learning more about this important advisory committee, please email Derek Hottell by February 10, 2017.

Group Exercise Classes
VCU Rec Sports offers group exercise classes to all VCU students free of charge! Members may drop into any group exercise classes, which are available on a first come, first served basis. Please plan to arrive at least 5 minutes before the class begins. Members who register online will be able to reserve a spot in the class ahead of time. Visit our Group Exercise Class Schedule to browse our full selection of classes.
 
Small Group Training
Small Group Training sessions include 5 - 13 exercisers in programs including Olympic-style Weightlifting, Functional Fitness Training, Mindful Yoga, Taekwondo, and more! In the small group setting, you and your group will focus on setting goals and making measurable progress. By the end of your 4 - 8 week training session, you will have advanced and improved your skills along side your peers. Personal Fitness Training
Register to work with a Personal Fitness Trainer and design a customized fitness program to meet your individual needs, interests, and goals. VCU Recreational Sports currently offers Basic Fitness Assessment and Consultations as well as Individual, Partner, and Group Training packages of 3, 6, or 12 sessions. Give it a Tri! Triathlon Training Program 
 

Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace, while increasing their overall fitness and improving triathlete skills. The goal is to complete a triathlon over the 5 week program. No triathlon experience needed!

A triathlon consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles.

Participants will track their progress through accumulated milage during individual workouts, classes, and lessons. Some free options for Tri training include:

  • U.S. Masters Swim Practices
  • Weekly workouts available on pool deck
  • Indoor Cycling Classes 

Dates: The program runs from January 30 to March 3.

Cost: FREE for VCU students and Rec Sports members

Register for the Tri Training Program by February 3, 2017

No previous triathlon experience necessary!

Special Events

Save the Date! Indoor Sprint Triathlon: March 18, 2017

This event will be held at the Cary Street Gym and is open both to new and experienced triathletes. Participants must have some experience swimming, biking and running. You don't have to participate in the Tri training program to participate.

Trial Memberships and Free Personal Fitness Assessments
Did you know that Rec Sports offers a free one month trial membership for faculty and staff who have not been members before? Also, through February 28, current members can earn a free personal fitness assessment, and a free semester locker rental or semester towel rental for referring a friend who purchases a membership! Tommy Otterbine
VCU Rec Sports welcomes our new Assistant Director for Structured Sports & Outreach Programming, Tommy Otterbine!
 
Tommy Otterbine joined the VCU Rec Sports staff just before the end of Fall semester. Serving as the Assistant Director for Structured Sports and Outreach Programming, he will manage the Sport Club and Intramural programs and the department’s outreach efforts including summer youth camps, adaptive and inclusive programming, and special events. This newly structured position allows VCU Rec Sports to provide more support and resources to our students and members and expand our program offerings.

Tommy has served in the collegiate recreation field for over a decade. Prior to joining our team at VCU, he was the Assistant Director for Campus Recreation at Penn State University where he helped build the sport club program to one of the largest and most inclusive in the country. 

An avid distance runner, Tommy is the founder of the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) which is the national governing body for collegiate club cross country and track and field in the United States. He is also the founder of a distance running camp for middle and high school students in northeastern Pennsylvania. 

With an emphasis on student development and engagement, Tommy will work to continue the success of the program offerings within the department, grow participation and involvement, and develop exciting initiatives for our students and members.
 
 
Special Swim Times
 
NEW! Family Swim Hours
To better accommodate our families, we are opening up Family Swim Hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the Cary Street Gym Aquatic Center, running January, 14 to May, 12, 2017. 

NEW! Female Only and Male Only Swim
Every other Friday beginning January 20, MCV Campus Aquatic Center will feature a Female Only swim time from 7 - 9 p.m.! We will have female lifeguards and blinds on the pool deck for ultimate privacy. Male Only swim time will be held on alternating Fridays, beginning on January 27, with male lifeguards on hand.
